We often think of summertime as being a hot and dry time of the year. When a storm hits the Kansas City area in the months of July, August and September they can bring a lot of rain. Some storms might provide a half an inch others can provide several inches of rain per hour.
When the soil is dry, a lot of rain often times runs off instead of soaking into the soil easily. All that rainwater has to go somewhere, unfortunately, the clay soil in the KC is horrible for drainage. This can wreak havoc on a basement foundation.

What Is Hydrostatic Pressure?Bowing Wall in Kansas City

The water takes the path of least resistance. Until it reaches clay soil. The water can get stuck in the soil. This can lead to what is called hydrostatic pressure. Hydrostatic pressure is defined as the pressure exerted by a fluid at equilibrium at a given point within the fluid, due to the force of gravity. It increases in proportion to depth measured from the surface because of the increasing weight of fluid exerting downward force from above.

If the soil around your basement is saturated with water, there could be up to tens of thousands of pounds of hydrostatic pressure. This is going to one of two things to your foundation walls.

  • Basement Flooding due to gaps and cracks
  • Bowing Wall due to the amount of weight pushing in on your foundation
